Ps. Reni spoke on the topic ‘Carol of the Angels’, following the Christmas theme for the month of December. The sermon was based on Luke 2 and the carol ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’.
Ps. Reni shared that the reason Christians celebrate Christmas is because God came down to earth in the form of man to save us and to become Emmanuel – God with us.
The carol, ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, even starts off with asking people to listen to the songs the angels were singing, as the angels proclaimed great joy to the shepherds – that a Savior had been born to them! That Savior is God clothed in flesh, the Messiah.
Every Jew would have heard of the prophecy of the Messiah but the angels did not appear to those who were of high ranking, appearing instead to the people who were considered the least: the shepherds.
The angels proclaimed peace in a world that desperately needed peace. Despite the fact that we have rejected God, He did not give up on us but sent His Son as a ransom for us.
Ps. Reni ended his sermon by inviting the congregation to sing the carol ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ with renewed meaning in the lyrics and also the meaning behind the song.
