Tan Sai Boay was born in Bukit Mertajam, Penang and is the fourth child in a family of 10 siblings. She completed her secondary school education in Jit Sin High School, Bukit Mertajam and had hoped to further her studies. However, due to a lack of finance, she was forced to start work right after her secondary schooling.
In 1987, she enrolled into the Penang Nursing School, thanks to a recommendation that came through a friend. That’s where she found a passion for nursing.
Sai Boay was born into a Taoist family but later embraced Buddhism in secondary school. She had her first exposure to Christianity during her nursing training in Penang.
She was later transferred to the Klang General Hospital in 1990. She then met Mr. Ding Hock Ming and they married in 1993. She has been blessed with a stepson and a daughter, and is now a grandmother of two.
In 1997, Sai Boay was led her to buy a house in Klang Jaya. Her husband persuaded her to send their daughter to Sunday School – where she first came into contact with the church which later became BethanyLife.
In her heart, she had always longed for a real relationship with God. So when she was invited to join a ladies Bible Study group in church, she accepted the invitation. At the Bible Study, she found Jesus and invited Him into her life.
After she gave her life to the Lord in 1999, Sai Boay fervently prayed for her husband to return to church, as he had left church for some time. The Lord graciously honoured her prayer and she testifies that her husband has now returned to church.
In 2014, The Lord also answered her prayers in a miraculous way, when she shared about Jesus to her sister who was a Master in Buddhism. Her sister was battling cancer and Sai Boay was burdened for her salvation. Wonderfully, her sister surrender her life to Jesus just one month before she lost her battle to cancer.
Another wonderful blessing came when the Lord fulfilled Sai Boay’s unfailing desire to further her studies – a desire that she held for almost two decades. By the grace of God, Sai Boay graduated with a Degree in Nursing in 2013.
As a senior nursing staff, Sai Boay is grateful for the opportunities she gets to pray and comfort the patients she meets at the hospital, who are in critical condition.
In ministry, Sai Boay has had experience teaching in the children’s ministry for many years. She has also been involved in mission teams to the “orang asli” (Malaysian aboriginal) villages. She is currently co-leading her LifeZone and is involved in the Social Concerns Ministry and the Ladies’ Ministry.
Her life verse is Mathew 25:36b, where the Lord says, “I was sick and you looked after me…” As a nurse, she says she is privileged to serve the Lord every day in this manner.
